By: Michael Koonar, PT
As the population continues to age, there is a shift toward treating the conditions that affect the elderly. If your practice is like mine, we tend to treat a wide age group, from the athletic injuries of weekend warriors to aging issues of our baby boomer and elderly populations. There has been an increased focus on mobility and balance problems with the ultimate goal being improving function and activities of daily living, and preventing falls. Treatment strategies range from screening and identifying risk factors to developing effective rehabilitation exercise programs.

WAVE is so happy to have contributed to the success of these elite athletes. The WAVE Pro Elite was in the warm up and recovery facility on the hill in Vancouver for the US Ski athletes to use to get their muscles firing and ready for the races. The team’s director of Sport Science says, “We find the machine incredibly useful for waking up the neurological system and applying loads through the body that we just can't get from traditional weight training.”
Congrats to Lindsey Vonn on her gold and bronze medals, to Bode Miller on his gold, silver and bronze medals and to Julia Mancuso who took home two silvers and finally Andrew Weibrecht on his bronze.

The United States’ Ski and Snowboard teams will be using WAVE (Whole-body Advanced Vibration Exercise) technology to fire up their muscles during the 2010 Winter Olympics. The athletes trained on the WAVE Pro Elite at the US Ski and Snowboard Association's Center of Excellence - the national training and education center in Park City, Utah - and have now brought it to their training facility in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"The US Ski Team is excited to have a WAVE Pro Elite right on the race hill at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. We have a warm up area at the bottom of the race hill and will be using the WAVE Pro Elite to get our athletes perfectly primed immediately prior to their race. This will be an important factor in our success. We find the machine incredibly useful for waking up the neurological system and applying loads through the body that we just can't get from traditional weight training," says Troy Flanagan, Director of Sport Science, US Ski Team and US Snowboarding.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that not only attacks the muscles, it weakens a person's hope for a better life. A unique program in Omaha is strengthening the arms, legs and attitudes of MS patients.
“It makes me feel stronger.” Multiple sclerosis has weakened Jeff Morris, but not his resolve to get stronger. “Keep hoping that research, trying to find anything new.”
Morris is part of a study using a machine called "The WAVE" that sends vibrations through the muscles of patients with MS. “It's going to improve motor skills dramatically, decrease muscle spasticity, dramatically increase flexibility,” says Aaron McKim of Comfit Solutions.
